Combilifts Iron Out Handling Problems For AJN Steel

15 Combilifts are in operation at AJN Steel, a leading independent steel stockholder which supplies customers across East Anglia, the East Midlands and North London.

Safety Increased

AJN ordered its first Combilift in 2001 as a much safer alternative to counterbalance trucks which were not coping with the 18 metre loads.  Further orders quickly followed due to the Combilift's ability to drastically improve storage and handling. A second fleet of 9 LPG modesl was ordered to coincide with the company's move to new premises, where the trucks now handle the complete range of varying sized product such as universal beams, flat bars, angles and columns.

Reduced Operating Times

Two of the new trucks are 7 tonne capacity Combilifts, to enable them to deal easily with the harsh working conditions and exteme loads.  These work mainly in the cantilever racking in the outside storage areas.  The 4-tonne machines are used in the storage sheds in guided aisle operations or for taking product to cutting machines or shot blasting facilities.  The Combilift guided aisle system speeds up operations whilst protecting both product and racking from damamge.

The Best Of Both Worlds

MD Alan Boyden is extremely impressed with the Combilifts:  "We have the best of both worlds: we can save storage space due to the 4-way ability, their flexibility means we are always equipped with the right truck for the job, and we have got rid of risky high level maoeuvres associated with the counterbalance trucks."
